How a Blind Man and His Guide Dog Survived the North Tower on 9/11

This is the story of Michael Hingson and his guide dog, Roselle.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Michael and Roselle were on the 78th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Blind from birth, Michael relied on Roselle, a loyal Labrador Retriever, to navigate the world by his side. That day, their bond would be tested like never before.

As chaos erupted around them, the pair descended 1,463 steps in total darkness, guided only by trust and courage, fighting to survive the unimaginable attacks on the Twin Towers.

“All the way down the stairs, the fact that I kept telling Roselle what a good job you’re doing helped a lot of other people, because they saw me focusing and being in charge of my situation,” he told PIX11. Thirty minute later, Michael, Roselle, his colleague, and five guests all got out of the tower safely.

When they got down to the lobby, they were instructed by an NYPD officer to run for cover before the building collapsed.

Roselle and Michael ran through the dust-filled streets of Lower Manhattan and Roselle eventually ushered him into a subway station and to safety.

Looking back, Michael says he is eternally grateful that Roselle kept him and others calm through the disaster. Roselle lived until age 14. She died in the summer of 2011.
