A loyal dog who stood vigil over his deceased owner after a deadly hit-and-run in southern Los Angeles is now getting a second chance thanks to a kind-hearted stranger.

The dog wouldn’t leave his owner’s body for hours.

Alex Choi, a dog lover and social media personality, learned that a dog was refusing to leave the scene of the accident that claimed the life of his owner, a 63-year-old cyclist struck and killed at an intersection. The dog, an Akita mix, howled for hours as first responders worked.

A friend at the scene called Choi when he saw the officers struggling to get the dog to go with them. When Choi contacted animal control, he was told the dog would likely be sent to a high-kill shelter and put down if no one stepped forward. Determined to help, Choi went to the location and tried to coax the grieving dog away. The dog had to be gently dragged by the leash and kept looking back to where his owner was

The dog is thought to be an Akita/Husky mix

Locals told Choi that the dog’s owner may have been struggling with homelessness but that the dog was always with him. When Choi brought the dog home, the grief-stricken animal was so distraught that within 24 hours he clawed his way out of the house, chewing through a door. Choi believed the dog was trying to find his dad. He searched for days, asking for help on social media and from friends. Three days later the dog was found at a gas station with a bag over his head, covered in fleas and ticks.
