Reshareworthy

Hobie was a homeless Golden Retriever roaming the streets of East Los Angeles. Then just weeks later, he found himself learning to surf. Hobie was rescued by Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue and soon became part of an unusual mission: to show people just how much potential a rescue dog can have.
World champion surfer Chris de Aboitiz, founder of SUP Dog Oz, took Hobie under his wing. De Aboitiz had spent years teaching dogs to paddleboard and surf, using the water to help strengthen the bond between dogs and their people. He also travels to raise awareness for shelters and rescue dogs.
When he learned about Hobie, he saw an opportunity. Hobie had never even seen the ocean before. But over the next few weeks, De Aboitiz introduced him to the water and began teaching him how to ride a surfboard.
Then came the big test. In 2016, Hobie and De Aboitiz entered Surf City Surf Dog, a major dog surfing competition in Southern California. Hobie wasn’t just there to compete. He was there to show what a rescue dog could do. And he surprised everyone. The pair finished second in their competition.
But the best part of the story was waiting on shore. Marlene and Kevin McGlensey had fallen for Hobie and adopted him. They watched from the beach, cheering him on as their newly adopted dog took on the waves.
Hobie had started out homeless, with no idea what his future would hold. But he got a family cheering for him—and a whole ocean of possibilities ahead.
