Fabiola was hiking with friends near Mexico’s Iztaccíhuatl mountain when they unexpectedly came across a skinny, underweight Boxer wandering alone.
The friendly dog immediately began following the group. She stayed with them all the way back down the mountain, and by the time they reached the bottom, Fabiola knew she couldn’t leave her behind.
Fabiola had recently gone through a breakup and had also lost her own canine companion. Her heart went out to the 7-year-old Boxer, who was clearly friendly and seemed to have once belonged to someone.
She took the dog home, named her Shanti, and brought her to a veterinarian. That’s when she learned Shanti had TVT, a transmissible form of cancer. Fabiola suspected the illness may have been why someone had abandoned her on the mountain. Thankfully, Shanti received treatment right away. Just three months later, she was cancer-free.
Today, Shanti is healthier, happier and loving her new life with Fabiola. What began as a chance encounter on a mountain turned into something neither of them expected. She said, “We rescued each other… I’m so thankful she followed me down the mountain that day.”
