Some goodbyes are simply too hard to put into words. So Diego said goodbye to his best friend the only way that felt right—on the sea they loved.
Costa Rican surf instructor Diego Jiménez lost his beloved Pit Bull, Thai, who had been by his side through so much of his life.
Thai wasn’t just Diego’s companion. He was part of his work and became a familiar presence to the students who came to learn how to surf.
“He welcomed nervous beginners, waited on the beach, celebrated every wave, and somehow knew exactly who needed a friend that day,” Diego shared.
When it was time to say goodbye, Diego carried Thai out on his surfboard for one final journey together. He surrounded his beloved deceased dog with flower petals before gently releasing his body into the ocean.
Diego shared his thoughts on bidding farewell to the friend who had shared so many waves, sunsets and memories with him. “See you soon and we will always feel each other, in every wave, in every sunset, always in the sea,” Diego wrote.
Some dogs leave paw prints on our hearts. Others become part of the places we love where they remain there forever.
