Seven weeks ago, a Maltese pup named Einstein ran off from his guardians while on holiday and was lost in dense South Australian scrubland. But in a miraculous turn of events, 12-year-old Einstein is now recovering after being rescued by a family who recognized him from a poster.
Jeff and Sue Johns said the past seven weeks have been “hell on Earth.” As days turned into weeks with no sightings, they began to believe the worst. They thought he might have been taken by a snake or met some other tragic end. “It was disheartening,” they shared. Sue said she burst into tears the moment they received the call that Einstein had been found.
Einstein survived by finding water, but he had no access to food. When discovered, he was skin and bone — once nine kilos, he had dropped to just four.
Mark Reeve, the veterinarian who treated the dog, noted that Einstein had reached the point of exhaustion, likely making it possible for him to finally be found. “He had run out of energy,” Reeve said, guessing that the dog’s weakened state might have helped him be rescued.
Thanks to the family who recognized him from the poster, Einstein is now safe, recovering, and back where he belongs
