Ed Lighthall is ecstatic that his dog Pete is back home. The poodle mix disappeared 10 years ago after he escaped from the yard and was then likely stolen. So when Lighthall got a call that Pete had been found wandering in the streets in Hammond, Indiana, he was stunned but overjoyed. The dog had been picked up by animal control with a number on a tag. And when they called, the person who answered the phone and said they no longer wanted the dog. But Pete also had a microchip and that company called Lighthall.

“I’m still on a cloud – this is unbelievable,” he told 5 Chicago News. “I would tell people how much I missed him and how much it would mean if he ever came back. There are no words. I am filled with gratitude right now.”

Pete is older and slower but still filled with love and remembers Lighthall. “He is a lot older than when I last saw him…but it’s like I yesterday,” Lighthall said. “It is like we picked up where we left off. I’m happy. He is happy. Everyone who hears this story is happy. I am so thankful to those folks at animal control. They got me my dog back.”

Pete is going to get a welcome home party soon so the entire family can celebrate his return.
