“You’re loved, you’re here.” That’s what Tom Pappas of Ottawa Lake, Michigan tells the senior dogs who he takes home. A refuge, a sanctuary, a home to 20 senior dogs, Dirty Paws Agape Haven networks with dog shelters across the Midwest, adopting their oldest residents and giving them a loving place to spend their final years.
Pappas, a cardiologist, spoke with WTOL 11 about his mission to help the frequently overlooked shelter pets who have so much love to give. He said he gives the dogs what elderly humans want for themselves in their latter years – “dignity and love and passing on with their friends” around them.
Pappas noted that he’s learned a lot during his years caring for the old dogs, revealing, “Whatever time it is, it’s a good time. Each day [is] a gift. Each day you wake up and think ‘okay, I’m here’.”
