Family Dog Dies After Ingesting Gum with Xylitol

 Reshareworthy

Dogs are constantly sniffing out things to eat. They have a knack for finding food lying on the ground or tucked away in pockets and drawers. Unfortunately, for one Wisconsin family, their dog’s curiosity ended up having dire consequences after she ate something they had no idea could kill her.

While the family was out of the home, Luna a beautiful 2-year-old Golden Retriever, chewed open a container of Ice Breakers lemon-flavored chewing gum. Gum would not normally cause any problems if eaten by a dog, but this gum contained Xylitol, the chemical sweetener used in sugar-free foods and which is highly toxic to dogs.

After eating some of the sticks inside, Luna got very sick, and by the time the family rushed her to the vets she was already suffering from severe liver damage. The vets told the family the terrible news and they had to make a choice no pet parent ever wants to make. “We just didn’t want her to suffer so we had to put her down,” sobbed Samantha Caress.

Dogs Never Die. They are Sleeping in Your Heart.

This article is a must-read for everyone in the world who loves dogs. All dog lovers who have shared their homes, their hearts and their lives with the most loving, loyal and wonderful of four-legged furry best friends will also, at some point, experience the most heartbreaking aspect of adopting a dog. Saying goodbye. But just read what Ernest Montague wrote here.

Ernest, who describes himself here on DogHeirs as a Pit bull owner, wrote this beautiful article and says, “I wrote this several years ago in memory of Bolo, a black and white Pit Bull who would always go for a walk, right up to the day he died. He might only get 15 feet before he stopped and looked at me and gave me the look: ‘I can’t go any further. But don’t you think for one minute I’m done walking.'”

The experience of losing a dog is a universal one for every pet parent. I hope Ernest’s wise words help you, or someone you know, even if just a little.

some of you, particularly those who think they have recently lost a dog to ‘death’, don’t really understand this. I’ve had no desire to explain, but won’t be around forever and must.

Dogs never die. They don’t know how to. They get tired, and very old, and their bones hurt. Of course they don’t die. If they did they would not want to always go for a walk, even long after their old bones say: ‘No, no, not a good idea. Let’s not go for a walk.’ Nope, dogs always want to go for a walk. They might get one step before their aging tendons collapse them into a heap on the floor, but that’s what dogs are. They walk.

It’s not that they dislike your company. On the contrary, a walk with you is all there is. Their boss, and the cacaphonic symphony of odor that the world is. Cat poop, another dog’s mark, a rotting chicken bone (exultation), and you. That’s what makes their world perfect, and in a perfect world death has no place.

However, dogs get very very sleepy. That’s the thing, you see. They don’t teach you that at the fancy university where they explain about quarks, gluons, and Keynesian economics. They know so much they forget that dogs never die. It’s a shame, really. Dogs have so much to offer and people just talk a lot.

When you think your dog has died, it has just fallen asleep in your heart. And by the way, it is wagging its tail madly, you see, and that’s why your chest hurts so much and you cry all the time. Who would not cry with a happy dog wagging its tail in their chest. Ouch! Wap wap wap wap wap, that hurts. But they only wag when they wake up. That’s when they say: ‘Thanks Boss! Thanks for a warm place to sleep and always next to your heart, the best place.’

When they first fall asleep, they wake up all the time, and that’s why, of course, you cry all the time. Wap, wap, wap. After a while they sleep more. (remember, a dog while is not a human while. You take your dog for walk, it’s a day full of adventure in an hour. Then you come home and it’s a week, well one of your days, but a week, really, before the dog gets another walk. No WONDER they love walks.)

Anyway, like I was saying, they fall asleep in your heart, and when they wake up, they wag their tail. After a few dog years, they sleep for longer naps, and you would too. They were a GOOD DOG all their life, and you both know it. It gets tiring being a good dog all the time, particularly when you get old and your bones hurt and you fall on your face and don’t want to go outside to pee when it is raining but do anyway, because you are a good dog. So understand, after they have been sleeping in your heart, they will sleep longer and longer.

But don’t get fooled. They are not ‘dead.’ There’s no such thing, really. They are sleeping in your heart, and they will wake up, usually when you’re not expecting it. It’s just who they are.

I feel sorry for people who don’t have dogs sleeping in their heart. You’ve missed so much. Excuse me, I have to go cry now.”

Thank you, Ernest, for sharing this with us. Bolo was one very lucky Pit Bull.

This is one of our favorite articles here at DogHeirs, and we come back to read it again and again. Make sure you share this with everyone you know who loves dogs.

Dog Comforts His Injured Owner At Scene Of Bus Accident

 Reshareworthy

After a public bus crashed in Medellin, Colombia, it was the unexpected presence of a dog who provided comfort at the scene.

The bus had crashed due to a mechanical failure and 38 people were injured as a result. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.

When the wife of one of the passengers was alerted about the accident, she came running to the scene and she brought Lucas, their dog. Upon seeing his dad lying down on the ground on a stretcher, Lucas ran to his dad, sniffing him and making sure he was okay.

The man patted Lucas, reassuring his concerned dog that he was all right.

When paramedics move Lucas’ dad, the dog stays right by his side, his tail wagging furiously. There’s no way he’s letting his dad out of his sight!

El Colombiano reported that the 38 injured people were take to medical centers for treatment. No doubt Lucas will be more than relieved when his dad can come home.

How To Identify Heat Stroke in Dogs

Whether a dog is left inside a car or left outside, warm temperatures can pose a danger to any dog. Even if a dog has a shady spot and water, if the temperature gets too warm, or the dog gets overheated, he or she can still suffer from heat stroke and die.

That happened to Courtney Rogers when she took her dogs including French Bulldog, Henry, on a walk. The day had been warm, tipping at 30 degrees (86 F) so she waited until evening. She made sure to check to see the pavement was cool enough for them to walk on and brought a doggy water bottle. But despite the precautions, Henry still got in trouble.

French Bulldog. Wikipedia

“We took them on our usual walk in the evening when it had cooled down a bit, along with a bottle of water for them both to drink when they needed it. About halfway through our walk, Henry started panting, like he usually does anyway because of his breed, but it got progressively worse,” she wrote. “After having large drinks from his water, the panting only got worse, to the point were his chest was rattling, and he was plonking himself down in any shade he could find, refusing to move.”

She rushed him to the vet but despite every attempt to save his life, a few hours later Henry was dead, overwhelmed by the heat. She shared her story in the hopes of saving other dogs’ lives.

Warm weather put a strain on a dog’s ability to regulate their internal temperature. As result, dogs can get heat exhaustion quickly, especially if walking or running.
